A Privilege to Serve: A Personal Reflection on Velkis and Little Jorge

It’s hard to put into words just how meaningful my time working with Velkis and little Jorge has been. I can honestly say that serving them has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life, both personally and professionally. While I’ve had the privilege of forming strong bonds with many people during my time at Casita, the connection I feel with them is truly special.

There’s something extraordinary about witnessing someone’s journey from a place of uncertainty to one of resilience and growth. I had the chance to witness that transformation firsthand with Velkis. When I saw her again last year, after many years, and she was scared and unsure of what the future would hold. Over time, I watched her blossom into a confident, determined woman — one who now walks down the street with her child on her hip, buying groceries or simply navigating the everyday challenges of motherhood.

It’s remarkable to witness this kind of transformation, especially when I think back to that first time I visited her and learned she was pregnant. At that moment, she seemed so small and vulnerable, but today, she’s a mother who projects strength and love for her son, Jorge. Her resilience has flourished in ways I never imagined, and it fills me with so much pride.

And then there’s Jorge. Little Jorge — he has this incredible ability to melt anyone’s heart. I’ve had the honor of being there for so many of his milestones, and it’s truly special to be a part of his life. I remember the first night he was born. I had the privilege of being there with his mom during labor, and that night I helped care for him — feeding him his first bottle, changing his first diaper. I know I’m not supposed to have favorites, but after spending that first night of his life together, a bond was formed that will never fade. He was a calm newborn and even let me get a little sleep that night — something I’ll always be thankful for.

After that, I got to care for him in my office during the day while his mom worked at Casita, and I would visit them after hours, watching our bond grow stronger each day. He’s now at the age where he knows exactly who I am and happily reaches up to me with his little arms when I’m around. Every moment with him is a gift.

“Are you my auntie?”

I consider Velkis and Jorge family. And I know they feel the same. It’s not just me; they see Casita and everyone there as their family too. They know that Casita helped them find their home and their independence. It’s this deep sense of connection — knowing they have a community that supports them no matter what — that gives them the security and confidence to thrive.

Thank you to everyone who supports stories like Velkis’ and Jorge’s. It is because of your commitment to our mission that people like them can find the strength to transform their lives. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be part of their journey, and I’m excited to see the amazing things they will continue to accomplish together.

At Casita, we’re more than just a program — we are a family. And I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of it.
