My name is Jodi, but most Copanecos know me as Didi. I am thrilled to be joining Casita as the new Communications Coordinator. The opportunity to live in beautiful Copán and create a lasting impact for its community is priceless.
Let me give you a glimpse into my background. I’m from a mid-sized city in the middle of North Carolina, which left me with the desire to explore and expand my horizons from an early age. I attended a bilingual elementary school, where I started learning Spanish at the age of 5. Having teachers from several Latin American countries (including one from Honduras!) sparked my passion for language and diverse cultures.
When I was 24, I travelled abroad for the first time to Barcelona, Spain, where I pursued a master’s degree in applied linguistics.
While in Spain, I found myself connecting more with a community-based organization rather than my academic studies. I spent a significant portion of my free time volunteering with a network of female professionals focused on empowering women from underrepresented populations working in the tech industry. This experience solidified my belief in the value of communities coming together and looking out for one another.
Even before my time abroad, I had always been drawn to engaging with different organizations in the various places I lived. It felt natural that I ended up working for a nonprofit. For me, I don’t see my passion in international development, but in strengthening communities, fostering solidarity with neighbors, and promoting mutual support.
That is precisely why I’m so excited to be working with Casita! It’s amazing to see the way this community of moms and children thrive with Casita Copán’s support. This has also been my first opportunity to work extensively with children. Their patience, acceptance, and ability to help me grow are truly inspiring. I’m eager to give my all to this position and contribute to the growth and development of these remarkable kids!
Long story short, I’m a passionate advocate for mutual support and believe in the power of collective efforts to create healthier communities. I joined Casita because I was thrilled to be part of an organization that empowers its neighbors by protecting the most fundamental group in any community— family. Witnessing the lasting joy and support that Casita provides to local families has been incredibly rewarding.
I’d love to get to know you! Feel free to say hello or ask me anything at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you for joining me on this journey!
