10 years later, I wouldn’t change a thing

“It’s impossible,” they said. “Don’t waste your time. So many people have tried to do something, but there’s just nothing you can do.”

Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if we had listened to that advice that seemed to come from every corner, our neighbors, friends, and even our families. Luckily, “impossible” was never part of the vocabulary of Casita Copán.

I have the privilege of reflecting on the last 10 years, the fearless people who were a part of founding our organization, and the incredible mothers who trusted their children into our care. And, of course, the beautiful kids who came to Casita and learned to walk, read, trust, dream, and love themselves and each other.

Everything we did in those first years was based entirely on trust that this was our purpose. Looking back, I don’t know how we believed it was possible; perhaps the naivete of youth or the overwhelming need in our community kept our vision focused on the road ahead rather than the cliff surrounding us. But whatever the reason, 10 years later, I wouldn’t change a thing.

These last 10 years have been filled with so much – birthday parties, graduations, first words, broken bones, first crushes, and funerals. Each moment is a testament to the community we’ve built at Casita Copán, and every one of you who has been a part of our little organization will stay a part of that story forever. And what a beautiful thing.

I could tell you a thousand stories from the last 10 years, and I know you’ve got a few of your own. But when I look back at all the stories, all I feel is gratitude. Gratitude that we’ve had this time together, that we’ve been able to create something bigger than ourselves. Gratitude that we’ve got more time ahead of us and even more dreams than we did back then.

Thank you for being part of Casita Copán’s story. Thank you for believing in the children of Copán Ruinas and us. They believe in themselves now too.
Join our celebration as we look forward to our next 10 years!
