It seems like there isn’t a lot that we haven’t experienced around here. Each day can be an unpredictable, wild mix of happy laughter, temper tantrums, meetings, parent visits, chores, the occasional visit from a furry friend, little ones reaching big milestones, and so much more.
Of course, with 50 plus kids and all of that going on, we have our fair share of medical emergencies. Sometimes, the issue is pretty clear-cut: someone breaks their arm or needs a few stitches. However, as many of you know, we’ve had quite a few more serious issues as well.
One example is Jesus. Jesus joined us from the local orphanage when he was just 8 years old. Malnourished and prone to epileptic seizures, Jesus had never received the care he needed. Shortly after joining us, he began to have seizures that could not be controlled. We visited local clinics, private hospitals, and eventually Jesus saw a series of neurologists who were able to finally prescribe a combination of medications that could successfully manage Jesus’s epilepsy. Today, Jesus is a normal 13-year-old boy with a manageable condition. He has been seizure-free for two years. UPDATE** Just a few weeks ago, Jesus visited the neurologist and his EEG came back completely normal! This is great news and means we can start reducing his medications.
Little Alba was hit by a car in a tragic accident that injured several members of our community and killed a young baby. Alba, with the other victims, was rushed to the hospital in Chiquimula, Guatemala and underwent emergency surgery on her skull the next day to prevent brain damage. Thankfully, she was able to survive the surgery and so far, there have been no complications with her recovery. In fact, with all the extra love and attention, we’ve even managed to fatten her up a bit.
At Casita, we don’t work with huge numbers of children and families across a wider region. Our impact – your impact – comes from the in-depth work we do the kids in our community. We know them, we raise them, we love them, and one by one, together we transform their lives.
Our strong base of child sponsors makes our work sustainable. When emergencies arise, of course it’s difficult, but it’s never impossible and that’s because of YOU. Become a sponsor today and become a part of our daily impact.
