Hey y’all! My name is Marissa Garcia and I am the new Director of Communications here at Casita Copán! As if you couldn’t already tell by my greeting, I arrived here from Texas (and no, not by a horse). It’s only been two weeks but I couldn’t be more thrilled to be part of the Casita Copán team!
I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Advertising from the University of Houston (go Coogs!) with minors in Spanish and Art History. While in my junior year at UH, I studied abroad in Cuernavaca, Mexico where my wanderlust began. After Mexico, I packed up and relocated to Peru. Volunteering in Cusco for three months went by incredibly fast and in the blink of an eye, I was in South Korea teaching English. In the middle of all my adventures, I would return home to Texas, but my heart has always been full of the desire to travel.
Before embarking on my new adventure here in Copán Ruinas, I previously held the title of Senior Graphic Designer at Melrose Family Fashions in San Antonio, TX. I led the team in photoshoots and graphic endeavours strengthening the brand and improving sales. Before moving to San Antonio, I was a Peace Corps volunteer in the small town of Charity, Guyana. While there, I taught several subjects but my pièce de résistance was fundraising and building the “Fun in da Sun” playground for all the children. I will never forget the day that all 500+ kids first laid eyes on the playground and the joy that ensued.
My love for living abroad and becoming part of an organization that creates change while improving lives has led me to Casita Copán. In my new role, I will be focusing on marketing, social media growth and of course spicing up our advertising with some graphic design flair! Casita Copán has already made amazing strides within the community, and I am excited to continue the growth and success! Everyday I am discovering the beauty and culture that is Honduras and I look forward to the future of Casita Copán!
