This Monday is Children’s Day, a holiday here in Honduras to celebrate children, and we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate children than to open our doors to some of the most vulnerable children in our community. So on Monday at 6 am (yes, I’ll be up that early!), we’ll be welcoming the very first children to Casita Copan’s daycare center. And we are so excited!
We’ve hired our first 2 local staff members and we have a team of high school volunteers who are dedicating their Saturday afternoon to cleaning and preparing the daycare center. Pledges of furniture, food, cooking items, used clothing, and medicine have already come in from local families and businesses. This is truly starting the way we intended it – as a community effort.
We’ve also been very lucky to have some great family, friends, and supporters who have made generous donations to help us get this project off the ground. Copán has the habit of staying in people’s hearts, and this was no exception. I want to personally thank all of our donors. We couldn’t do any of this without you!
The truth is, we are still far from our fundraising goal, but we believe that we need to address this need in our community as soon as possible. The first children in our daycare center are children who currently spend all day in the local shelter where they are at high risk of disease, developmental delays, abuse, and neglect. We are trusting that if we provide a real home away from home for the children who need it most, the funding will come. Please consider making a donation to our project, or simply spread the word. Happy Children’s Day!
